The victims, aged 38 and 48, g-suite cardinal manchester were wounded in the attack at a home on River Road, Kawerau, about 6.15am on Friday.
They remained in critical condition in Waikato Hospital on Friday night.
Police said no arrests had been made but the three were helping with inquiries.

"Everything we know so far indicates that these two men were targeted by a group of people," Acting Area Commander Greg Standen said.
"We have nothing to suggest that there are fears for anyone else's safety at this stage. I want to reassure the community that we are across this incident."

A fourth man who was assisting officers on Friday morning was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm but his arrest did not directly relate to the shooting g-suite cardinal, police said.
They are also searching for a dark-coloured car seen leaving the area immediately after the shooting.
